What are circuit grades?

Latitude introduced circuit grading to all of its boulders in the summer of 2020.  This was a conscious decision made by the management team and the route setters.  This decision was made for three primary reasons:

1. Boulder problems are subjective.  Height, flexibility, and individual strengths play a major role in how difficult an individual finds a particular boulder problem.

2. Circuits facilitate the social aspects of rock climbing in a very specific way.  Circuit grading allows groups of climbers to work on a range of boulders.  This, in turn, allows people to progress more quickly.  The intimidation brought on by a specific number being too hard disappears.

3. Circuit grading is great for training.  Latitude was built to inspire people to climb and meet their personal goals.  Progression requires effort and training.  The circuit grading is meant to complement the different types of training phases an individual may be working through, whether they seek to improve endurance, strength, or power.

We encourage everyone to work through the circuits.  If you have been stuck in yellow, give a green tagged route a try just because it looks fun or the visual aspects of the route inspire you.  We are confident that you will surprise yourself.
