Scouts at Latitude
Latitude hosted activities as part of the Boy Scouts Powder Horn 2020 event on September 12th and 19th. The event aimed to help introduce Boy Scout youth and adult leaders to high-adventure activities of a fun and challenging nature. To that end, Latitude brought in troop leaders for an exhilarating night of climbing and slacklining.
A variety of stations were available to give information about rock climbing. Specifically, Scout leaders could learn about outdoor climbing gear, diversity in climbing, how climbers with disabilities navigate the sport with special equipment, and hold types that routesetters use in gyms. The offerings were designed to encourage Scout leaders to try new activities to be able to introduce their troops to the world of climbing.
In an effort to support Scout participation in climbing, Latitude will soon feature Merit Badge counselors on staff. Members of the Boy Scouts can come learn about climbing and be rewarded for their efforts by earning a climbing merit badge. For more information, email Marisa@latitudeclimbing.com.
Wondering what involvement Latitude has with Girl Scouts? Latitude has deep roots to Girl Scouts. In fact, an owner of Latitude, Marisa Beck, was a Girl Scout all the way from Kindergarten through high school and earned the highest award, the Gold Award. Now as an adult, Marisa is a lifetime member of Girl Scouts. She relayed, “one of the reasons I founded Latitude was so that scouts could be introduced to rock climbing while never having to leave the area.”
Marisa showed her dedication when she collaborated with the local Hampton Roads chapter, Girl Scouts Council of the Colonial Coast, in order to create a special patch that scouts can earn when they come to Latitude. The patch has different levels of challenge and difficulty so that scouts of all ages can come and earn it while they learn to rock climb at Latitude.
Latitude has designed educational programming for scouts and all youth to conquer their fear of heights and learn to rock climb. Programming ranges from 2 hours to doing overnight lock ins, which have been a big hit for birthday parties, scout troops, and more! Interested in booking an event or learning more?
